The Mooresville Pioneers capped off their conference season in dramatic fashion Friday night, edging the Martinsville Artisans 76-74 behind a monster performance from Chris Thompson-Moore. The opening quarter set the tone for a fast-paced, up-and-down battle, with both teams lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of a 19-19 tie. Mooresville found ways to string together key defensive stops in the second quarter while maintaining its offensive rhythm. The Pioneers stretched their lead to double digits late in the half, but a Martinsville three-pointer before buzzer trimmed the margin to nine heading into the break, 41-32. The second half told a different story. Martinsville ratcheted up the defensive intensity coming out of the locker room, disrupting the Pioneers’ flow and turning defense into offense. Mooresville managed just 12 points in the third quarter as the Artisans steadily chipped away at the lead. The momentum carried into the fourth, where Martinsville finally broke through, taking the lead midway through the period and extending it to six with under four minutes to play. Facing adversity, Mooresville called timeout to regroup — and they responded. The Pioneers clamped down defensively and regained control of the tempo. With under a minute and a half remaining, Mooresville came up with a critical stop, then drained an open three-pointer with less than a minute to play to push the lead to four. Calm and composed at the free-throw line down the stretch, the Pioneers converted enough opportunities to seal the 76-74 victory. Thompson-Moore delivered a historic night, pouring in 46 points on an efficient 12-of-17 shooting from the field and 18-of-22 from the free-throw line. He added seven rebounds and five assists, leading the charge in every facet of the game. Mooresville now turns its attention to Tuesday, when the Pioneers travel to face the Danville Warriors. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.
